Akari Mochizuki: Enka and Traditional Japanese Music Concert

A unique voice of Japanese culture is joining the MondoCon lineup: Akari Mochizuki, a traditional Japanese music performer who has been building a bridge between Japan and international audiences for over two decades.

Originally from Japan, but based in the United Kingdom since 2003, she studied drama in Cambridge and contemporary music in London, and began performing enka in 2009. Since then, her career has gained international recognition: she has performed in over 21 countries and appeared at prestigious events such as HYPER JAPAN, the WOMAD festival, and even programs at the British Museum.

Akari is active not only as a singer, but also as a bilingual MC and cultural ambassador, regularly appearing on television (for example on TV Tokyo) and featured on BBC Radio. Through her performances, she brings the emotional depth of traditional Japanese music closer to international audiences, while making it truly engaging with a modern stage presence.

In 2021, she was appointed as an ambassador for Nike’s “DUNK” campaign, and in 2025 she also contributed as a local coordinator for a major sumo tournament held at the Royal Albert Hall in London — demonstrating her versatility in representing Japanese culture worldwide.

At MondoCon, you can experience a performance where tradition meets modern stage presence — well worth seeing live, whether you are already familiar with enka or encountering it for the first time.
