A Buddhist monk advised the villagers to create a colorful lion costume, and the bravest martial artists stepped inside to confront the beast. While the villagers made loud noises and waved red banners, the “lion” drove Nian away. Since then, tradition holds that the Lion Dance wards off evil spirits and brings luck and wealth to those who witness it.
